Minister of Culture Emphasizes Government’s Commitment to Making Culture the Foundation of Development

Sumedang – Minister of Culture Fadli Zon stressed that the government is committed to making culture the foundation of development. This commitment is why the Ministry of Culture was established.

“So, the first thing I want to quote is that advancing national culture is actually a constitutional command,” Fadli stated during his speech at the Second Wave of the Regional Heads Retreat, held at Balairung Rudini, Institut Pemerintahan Dalam Negeri (IPDN) Jatinangor Campus, Sumedang Regency, West Java, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

He explained that cultural values serve as the moral and spiritual foundation for realizing the President’s “Asta Cita” (Eight Ideals/Aspirations). According to him, all economic and technological progress would lose direction and meaning without deeply rooted culture. Therefore, Fadli advised regional heads and deputy regional heads to strengthen leadership based on cultural values.

He emphasized that the task of advancing culture is not solely the responsibility of the central government but also of local governments. Furthermore, the private sector’s role is crucial to ensure that culture-based programs have economic advantages. He cited an example of a region that successfully optimized the role of culture, making it known internationally.

“Just a few days ago, I was invited by the Governor of Bali, Mr. Wayan Koster, to open the Bali Arts Festival. From the Bali Arts Festival alone, we can see the diversity in each regency/city, even in the smallest areas,” he added.

Fadli further explained that culture can serve as Indonesia’s soft power. Through this strength, Indonesia can expand its influence culturally. Fadli urged regional heads and deputy regional heads to give serious attention to this field. This way, in addition to being a medium for public education, culture is also expected to be a source of economic growth in the regions.

He highlighted the promising economic returns from the cultural sector, specifically the creative economy. This is reflected in the success of several local films that have garnered public interest.

“So, this ecosystem is already alive, and it’s an excellent promotional medium for regions and local culture, because film is one of the most complete platforms for arts,” he concluded.
